Friday 2 August

We are talking about basic facts.
At the moment we are concentrating on x9.  Some people drew long-winded pictures to represent groups of nine on their thinkboards, so we looked on our equipment table and decided on some efficient ways to make groups of nine!

Amy used the numicon to show the number sentence seven groups of eight make 56.
Amelia is doing a basic facts exercise on e-ako.

Quick images.  How many dots do you see?  Explain how you saw the dots grouped.

A basic fact that trips people up ... 8+3.  If we know that 8 and 2 make 10, then it must be one more.

Georgia uses sticks to help her record the family of facts for 8+9.

Our tricky question of the day!
Well done Monique and Giorgia who were quick to solve this.  Room 18 students have taken this away to ponder as a couple of people thought that it only took George 3 minutes to bike home.  Brooke said that this was unrealistic!

Funnily, it was our very own George that had the best estimate in the beginning.  He said 20-30 minutes to visit Grandma.  (We wrote our estimates on the post it note before solving the problem - what do you think of the estimate in the photo?).
Jason and Monique add the dots on the two tens frames instantly!

Now they said how many more dots are needed to make 10, 20, 50 or 100.

Hardworking ALiM students!  Way to go Amy and George.

A FINAL REMINDER FROM MRS CULLING
You should now be working towards your 2000 e-ako points.

Next week Mrs Culling is away on Thursday, so I won't see you all till Friday.  Enjoy the snow on Wednesday!
